To launch or not to launch?

I've never had a book launch - ever.  I'm told they don't really impact on sales so I have never felt the need to have one.
But I have wanted to celebrate bringing a new book into the world and this time, on book 4, I'm contemplating it.
But it does seem very self serving. Really it's inviting a lot of people to come along, say nice things and buy my book. Can I really justify it? (Book launches don't come in cheap, for the record, and I've checked).
Derry - the City of Culture 2013 - has a lack of independent book shops and supportive and all as Eason are (and they are FAB!) they can't accommodate a few glasses of wine and a signing out of hours in a big old shopping centre which could hardly stay open just for little old me.
And yet, don't I deserve it? A little something? A little "yay you did it. You wrote a book with a new born and here it is and sure isn't it lovely?"

I veer between saying "feck it, let's have a party" to saying "don't be so stupid" and I just can't make up my mind either way.

Do you want to make up my mind for me?

I say DO IT! You've worked hard, you deserve a bit of a fuss and a party, and a fabulous outfit.

Do it. How many chances in life do you get?

Do it! I would love to come and get the book signed by my favourite author! You defintiley need and deserve an opportunity to celebrate! How about doing it in the library? Or the waterside theatre? Or in the atrium/bar area of the city hotel (I am sure they would relish the opportunity to have an appearance from a successful local author in the City Hotel - the City of Culture 2013!), somewhere that is featured in your book (not sure of the storyline but think its in Donegal is that right?), somewhere retro like doing it on the walls?

Or how about good ole Shipquay Books????? I am sure they would let you have a glass of bubbly albeit it might not be particulary posh inside!

GO FOR IT!!!

I'd say 'feck it, let's have a party'. But that's my answer to everything ...

Can you have it in the King William IV down the road so that I can drag my sad arse down to at least ONE book launch before I die (now there's a title...)? I think you SHOULD have one - like an annual vacation x

Do it! I was in two minds about mine right up until it started, but I LOVED it. Do it! Do it! Do it!

I say GO FOR GOLD, baby! I didn't do a bloody thing for my publication day... just went to work and didn't say a word to anyone. But think of how you slaved over your baby... it's such an amazing thing to do. It's something to savour and CELEBRATE :)

definitely you should. i know i would! but under the testing circumstances you've written it, you really deserve it. i don't mean to offend your beautiful little daughter, the one who never sleeps, but if i lived in derry i'd have certainly came to have your new book signed, since your 'rainy days and tuesdays' kind of changed my life. :)

Claire the verbal arts centre maybe?? My aunties friend got poetry published years ago and she had a wee reading there and then sold some books and stuff. I was about 11 so I don't remember much haha xx
